Orca haunted me as a child, and I mean HAUNTED. Only watching it as an adult was I able to determine that the only thing that gave the movie such an impact was the score. (I own it, by the way. Not quite primo Morricone, but worth a listen.)

I was 8, and was either too young, too stupid, or just too fucking amped up to be seeing a new Jaws movie in a theater! to realize it was crap. (But by the time it came out on VHS and I'd watched it three or four more times, I started to figure out that yes, Jaws: The Revenge was a terrible movie.)

Nice theory. My read on the tarantula-in-a-jar is more narratological than metaphorical.

I had read a bunch of these recaps before even watching the show, so I was prepared for the show to suck. But somehow my boif roped me into watching it, and damned if Sims wasn't completely right about this show's consistent mediocrity. And damned if those commenters who'd write into say that despite everything wrong

You don't even have to split hairs about the difference between almost-killing Brock and the icing of Dirtbike Boy to conclude that it would've been out of character for Walt to kill DB. The difference between his Brock gambit and Todd's mechanical murder is that Brock's death was a gambit. Every awful thing Walt has

I enjoyed Melissa as well… as a foil and a mirror for Brenda's worst, most self-admiringly "edgy" attitudes and impulses, she was unbeatable. Waymire underplayed the part nicely, too.

"Take your Fun-Fun!"

"The sputtering electricity in his courtship of Eddie—who does not want to be a father." I see what you did there, Teti. And I like it.

The last hour of FWWM is a tremendous film.

I think Katherine Hahn is signed up for a multiple-episode arc, and my best guess is the writers started Ben off in this episode strategizing well below her character's abilities so they'd have a place to go in the next few episodes. Undoubtedly there will be an A or B story soon where Ben and Jennifer go toe to toe,

Script coordinators seldom spend time in the writers room. They do spend a lot of time with a show's scripts, so I'll buy your general premise that the writing on Buffy was a strong influence on him… but I doubt he had much opportunity to absorb the culture of the show's room.
