Should have taken Death's advice and used a condom.

I really love the way the art changes in every book.  It's like the "Morpheus looks like how we think he would look" phenomenon, except instead "this story looks like how this story should look, regardless of how we've drawn the characters before."

Brief Lives is probably my favorite arc—a wonderful proto-American Gods that is a lot more fun—but it's maybe not the best place to jump in because it answers a lot of questions that had been building before then.  But Fables and Reflections might be a good place to start, since it's a lot of one-offs that don't

And it's how DC first reprinted it, which is why early trade paperback versions include issue 8 in both Preludes and Nocturnes and The Doll's House.

That's kind of funny, because my experience has always been that "A Game of You" is the least popular arc.  I knew a girl in college, for instance, who was buying the whole series except for that volume.

It isn't that it's "shaky", it's that it's not as epic as it would later be.  Plus, a few instances of early installment weirdness.  Buy, yeah, the stories here are still abso-fucking-lutely awesome.

Well, it would definitely have been more in place in 1989 than it is now.  Today, it would have been almost unthinkable that this comic would have taken place in main DC continuity.  But in 1989, that's basically what there was—one continuity.  I mean, it was still only a few years post-Crisis.  So, I recognize it's

This arc is the low point of the series.  It only gets better from here.  Give the second volume ("The Doll's House") a try.  If you don't like that, then you're probably right that you won't like the rest of the series.

Well, while it's well-written, it's clunky in terms of the rest of the book.  After Preludes and Nocturnes, there's nary a reference to superheroes in the rest of the series.  Sure, tons of references to minor DC characters (I'm looking at you, Prez), but superheroes totally disappear.  So, in that respect, it really
