Yes, this is exactly what I see in the Quark/Ferengi eps.  Quark is a kind of outsider among his own people, and is much more interesting in his way than the average stereotypical Ferengi.

I believe there was some discussion on the AV Club boards, when that awful Ayn Rand movie came out, that Armin Shimmerman liked Rand's novels.  He made some kind of appearance in the movie.  But then, I should probably not cite unreliable sources.  ;)
