As far as Howl, Castle in the Sky, and Princess Mononoke being tied for a place, I have to say that I'm baffled that Howl got the pick.  I don't know which of the other two I'd picked, but I wouldn't pick Howl.

Starting with Lupin III generally does sound like a bad call, but Castle of Cagliostro specifically is as good a first anime movie as any.
