That's exactly how I think of Herschel now - the wise old man/father figure, without Dale's relentless and highly impractical moralizing.

There is obviously a direct positive correlation between the amount of screen time given to Merle and the overall quality of an episode.  Same goes for Michonne slicing motherfuckers up.  It ain't rocket science - show the badasses being badass!
