I could be wrong here, but it's my understanding that the mechanisms those three used to move across universes had negative effects on the fabric and stability of at least one of the universes, whereas the bridge created by the machine didn't cause these problems (and even started to fix the damage already done).  So…

I'm so with you on Bent.  I had never heard about it until I read a TV Club review, so I checked it out and it was very good.  So of course NBC burned it off and it shall never be seen again.
