The problem with Gone Girl isn't that it's poorly written (its not) or that it has an uninteresting story; it's that it's a story that has been told many times across many forms of media.  It's impossible not to surmise where the Gone Girl is going because so many other books, movies, and shows have gone there before.

Guys, it just occurred to me, I mean really sunk in, that Walter and Peter will never see each other again.  Dear lord.

Keep in mind that peter is already an anomaly.  He was already erased from existence once so maybe that's why he wasn't effected by the reset.  To put it simply the Peter who drowned already never existed.

A lot of the stuff you listed was just window dressing.  It has always been about closing the circle that Peter, Walter and September were apart of and I thought that part was done really well.
