I think in more contemporary tales its shown to be a way that he stays grounded with humanity and doesn't lose touch with what's important. That was probably my main issue with the boxes, I'm pretty sure the NHS (and most other workplaces) would have some sort of policy like "Don't clutter up our hospital with these fucking boxes, also don't leave them in the cutlery tray in the canteen because gross! By my reckoning they could have probably got at least another 2 out instead of standing about so Amy could Deal Out Some Scottish Sass but I guess the sass is important too.
