I suspect someone in the Simpsons Organization was wise enough to keep the thing under wraps for a while. Surely the people closest to the show saw how wretched it was.

We got the Boomers beat twice. We were nostalgic for things AS THEY HAPPENED, as well as being nostalgic for the future we didn't get BECAUSE THEY FUCKED UP
Because with very few exceptions, the people of the time decide what to pass on to the next age. Sure, there are always a few things that are rediscovered centuries later. But for the most part, people are pretty good at figuring out what the really good things are as they happen.
It's a close call. I'd say Simpons has a slight edge because they aimed higher (the lampooning of the entirety of Western Culture) and hit the mark.
