@Lloyd: I'm with you in the respect that the first half of S1 is not nearly as uneven as people make it out to be, but I would shoulder most of the blame on "Advanced Criminal Law" (aka Britta Cheats). In my mind, that episode is probably the worst of S1 and it had a sense of forcing the whole Jeff/Britta stuff.
