I really need to read all of McCarthy's stuff. I say he's my favourite author, but I've got all of his books on my shelf and have only read three of them. Of course, of those three, I've read them several times.
I just finished A First Rate Tragedy, about Robert Falcon Scott's South Pole expedition. Now I'm 2/3 the way through Lost at Sea, about two sister crab boats that mysteriously sank in calm waters in 1983.
Damn you, @Trurl. I was going to say the same thing, but before I posted I decided to scroll down, just in case…
"In his office, he keeps a giant oil painting of himself making his first oral arguments before the Supreme Court, which he lost. “I’ve always enjoyed the fact that as I’m sitting at my desk, I’m looking at a giant painting of me getting my rear end whipped 9–0. . . It is helpful for keeping one grounded.”
I just moved and I bought about 10 bookshelves, as I also have a lot of books (probably 2/3 of them being for my online bookselling that I need to return to), and it's been well over a month and I still haven't gotten them all organized and on shelves.
Ha ha, what a story, @avclub-22eda830d1051274a2581d6466c06e6c:disqus !But seriously, that's heartbreaking.
She probably still would've killed him. Somehow.
You have truly lived up to your name this day, friend.
I had dream about a wench, a wife, and a traveling bootblack.
We fear change.
The problem with what Lorne said is that I grew up with the late 80s SNL, but still found the show funny all the way up to the point when Ferrell left. That's what I consider two iterations (at least) of the show. And I laugh at the first seasons as well.
Anyone who disagrees is insubordinate…
And I thought finally seeing JAWS in a theater for the first time last year was awesome. I have a new mission in life.
The funny thing about it all to me is the novel refers to the shark as a fish most of the time. It's actually what I find interesting about the book. It's "the great fish" this, "the great fish" that. I think it lends it a more enthralling presence, since the word "fish" isn't nearly as terrifying itself as the…
And yet somehow, the shark will get there ahead of you.
I'm sorry, but it's "Front, bow! Back, stern! If you don't get it right, squirt, I throw your ass out the little round window on the side!"
Very close, just missing a few details.Ron and Valerie Taylor built a cage in proportion with a little person, so that 16 foot Great Whites would look 25 feet, just like the shark in the movie. Of course, it's hard to find anyone willing to get into the water when they're trying to coax Great Whites into messing with…
I love that Bryan Singer is a special guest voice on that one, as his production company is Bad Hat Harry, as in Brody saying to that old geezer "That's some bad hat, Harry" when he makes fun of him for not ever going in the water.
JAWS is my favourite movie ever, and I've read the book a few times as well. It's one of the few times I can recall where the film improved on the source material.
