I agree, that was the only part of the season that didn't really work for me. Like you said, i didn't actually care what the 'real' explanation was, but it did smack of condescension, and it was all made worse by Moffat's comments in the intermediary two years; encouraging fans to 'guess' how Sherlock had actually

and mistakes the owner of the convenience store for a Yakuza boss

Who'd they kill off before they were full explored? A couple of characters were admittedly scrapped as a bad idea (Nikki/Paulo and their ilk) but the others i would say all got full arcs. Personally the only character i think they might have done away with prematurely was Eko, and that was because the actor wanted out.

Me too. Loved it. It's also completely legitimate for people to dislike it. I think it's got a disproportionately bad reaction because there's no tying up of the entire series. Personally, i think if you watched the entire thing you should have been aware that the writers' main priority was character and not mystery

Been on a classic Sci-Fi binge for a while; finished The Demolished Man over the Christmas period (technically just before January, but, you know) and i'm most of the way through Cities in Flight by James Blish. (I'm reading the books in the order they're published in the collected edition, i.e. chronological, but

Great episode, probably one of my favourite Christmas eps of the new series. Was a bit disappointed that they didn't go for the Victorian-Clara as a companion, i think it'd be nice to see a companion that isn't from 20th/21st century Earth for a change.

If that's what the writers intended then i'm impressed, as that's more aware than most writers are with regard to time travel. Although another interesting point is that i'm pretty sure the Observers originally traveled back to our time because their world was being/was destroyed; perhaps they don't have two years

How amazing would it be to have an accompanying podcast that was just Walter's internal monologue during all his scenes?
