Really good review of this, especially in regards to the opening sequences. It's a bit of a disappointment after Silent Light (what wouldn't be), and at times seems willfully obtuse. Still, the stuff that works in it works as well as the best moments in other Reygadas films. Some of the family scenes from later on in

Agreed! His best movie by far.

Agreed. Watched the third episode last night. Very little happens, in a conventional sense, but it's completely riveting.

Mr. Skin Graft?

I think Gatsby will be nothing short of horrendous, but I'm not a fan of Baz Luhrman anyway. I am curious to see if the 3D will actually make him hold his shots for longer than .5 seconds. His hyperactive cutting just seems at odds with the format.

They're freaky but they got nothing on the masks from The Strangers.

I have this hope that it has a structure similar to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, where after a big action sequence, Downey's narration comes in to tell us it didn't actually happen like that at all. The world needs a truly smart ass superhero movie.

"Hell, that's Bebe's kids!"

Frank Grimes?

Now that's synergy!

"They won't have the life experience of Rabin!"

Spot-on about Tasha. She could have only written about animated films and she'd still be a favorite. I can't think of another critic/writer who has the same level of insight into that form.

It's very hard to watch. They are all pretty devastated. But the episode is so well done, and such a great tribute to what Hartman brought to that character,

I prefer the Cash version, but his version without that video just wouldn't have quite the same impact.

This was first thing I thought of too. Wonderful choice.
