I agree with all of this, except I'm confused as to how you torture a kitten to death with a hammer. Do you, like, follow it around and tap it on the head a few times a day, gradually increasing the strength of each tap over time?

Oh, I'd say she's bad in it for sure. It's a fun movie because of Raimi and everyone else, but her faux-Eastwood schtick is embarrassing. There's nothing even remotely menacing about her, and she's the hollow center of what is otherwise a wonderfully cast movie.
The Pledge is probably Sean Penn's best film as a director, but even that one has the same script issues the other ones have. Considering the expressive visuals and how generally emotive his actors are, every Penn film would likely be improved by being a silent film.

Sports movies are better when they take the heartfelt inspiration and wrap it in violence and vulgarity (like Goon).
