I kind of wonder this too. I like the show ok, but it isn't helping the cause (and I'm not singling out Todd) that so many of these vocal supporters seem dismissive of all social issues but sexism.

They're about to go into the party, and Hannah says, "It's like Waterworld in there." I'm still not sure what she meant, but I will give the show props if it's actually allowing one of its characters to make a deliberately unconsidered joke. More likely, the writers just thought there was something inherently clever…

Has anyone figured out that WATERWORLD joke from a couple episodes back?

True. But I think women hate on female actors the most. Men, to a larger degree at least, don't care as much about what actors they're watching. And if one is attentive to human behavior outside of their own (as writers should be), it's no more difficult to write for either gender.

Why is allowing her a deeper motivation lame? It enforces the entire series' themes of motherhood (beginning with the name of the computer in ALIEN), and allows the screenplay a satisfying dramatic irony.

BAD SANTA and MIAMI VICE weren't good movies in the first place. But if I were to pick a Mann movie ruined by its directors cut, it'd be LAST OF THE MOHICANS, not VICE. People only put up with the 90-minutes of inert history lesson for the awesome battles at the end. By removing the Clannad pop song (the point where…

Only people who are dishonest with themselves have guilty pleasures. Hate-watching, though likely a waste of energy and time, is at least a true response.

That's why I think VERSION 2.0 and BEAUTIFULGARBAGE are actually their best albums. The band always sounds forced when it tries to rock, but is great as a manic-depressive pop act. The new album is somewhere between those two personalities.

There's definitely an advantage to a site trying to expose you to all sorts of media. It's just that there's a know-it-all approach toward some artforms and genres with which I don't feel the writers are well versed. Hip-hop being a big one. I enjoy the AVClub, but it tries to encompass more than it understands (like…
The AVClub's problem has always been that it tries to be everything-centric.
It is not that good. AVENGERS has some life to it in moments of comic banter between the supergroup, but most of the time it's weighted down by length and noise. Joss Whedon is a great television director, but is only able to get the job done on the big screen. This is despite his few showoff long takes which stand…
I like MACHINA. It's one of the most self-indulgent concept albums ever, and that actually gives it some of its character. The Pumpkins are one of those bands that are better when they're more pretentious.
