So when exactly does season 5 get good? Because I tore ass through seasons 3 and 4 in a couple weeks, and even with that momentum, Byron stopped me cold. Haven't seen the end of the show.

I would say that there are individual episodes of DS9 that stack up to B5's best, but the sustained awesomeness of B5 from about midway through season 2 through the end of season 4 is just staggering. DS9 never sucks quite as bad but it never achieves the same force either.
