They pretty explicitly are making her a completely different character from book Shae. I think the idea they're going for is Tyrion wanting someone who's more of an intellectual equal than book Shae, who's not particularly smart of knowledgeable. Or Lorathi.

I agree. I like the story of Ned sacrificing his precious honor for his dying sister by saving her son from getting his head Cleganed by claiming him much, much more than a seemingly motiveless baby switch.

I've always assumed he joined the Nights Watch after Robert's Rebellion once Ned and Cat had a couple of kids and felt secure about the succession.
