Starbuck, I personally think it has more to do with the tendency Trek has at times to be very anvilicious.  I think snappier dialogue would have helped more so than a different setting.

I love going on YouTube and watching the previews for the next Star Trek episodes.  At times, I feel like they give way too much away (the one for Duet sticks out in my mind).  Why the hell bother watching when you just gave away half the plot?

I'll be the dissenter here and say "Past Tense" is not quite a slog, but it's a bit lumbering.  I don't think it justifies the two-part format.  But the callback to it in S4 improves it retroactively.

In all seriousness, though, if "Profit and Lace" could be stricken from the record books, the Ferengi episodes take a huge jump in quality.  I will hear no ill spoken of "The Magnificent Ferengi."
