There are parts of the book that are handled very well (I remember the matter-of-fact handling of his sister's abortion impressing me as a teenager - wonder what the movie does with that subplot), but there were bits that just didn't work, with the molestation business (and anything to do with the aunt, really)

Good points. Part of the issue is that older, 'canonized' movies have the benefit (or burden) of decades of reflection, so you can approach them with some perspective - a new release that's hailed as a masterpiece is a little bit dubious, though not necessarily untrue.
