Agreed.  Their EPs and Nowhere are great.  After that  things get pretty bland pretty quick.

@avclub-eac75edc18b8546c46893fe4b75ab995:disqus  I can't say that I disagree with you.  The first Slowdive record is beautiful in parts but also falls onto the wrong side of the ethereal/ corny line too often.  With Souvlaki they created a masterpiece.  Then they made an album of bleeps and bloops and broke up.

@avclub-efb3d8be0319721ef751da0b05d9f6a5:disqus That's always been the weird thing about Malick in my opinion.  Amazing films stuffed with crap actors.  Richard Gere? Colin Farrell? Ben Affleck? It is as if he wants to offset the beauty of his cinematography with the ugliness of horrible actors.

Well, I can't take credit.  It was Steve Coogan's observation.

Days of Heaven, of course, and also American Gigolo which is maybe Paul Schrader at his most Paul Schradery (not a bad thing but certainly an icky, uncomfortable thing).

Right.  The guy makes pleasant country rock.  He doesn't fly a drone into weddings in Kabul.

@avclub-5d77e64245d989eaec72baa3fa3951f3:disqus Right.  As I understand it most respectable historians now agree that the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not at all tactically necessary but were a symbolic preface to the Cold War that happened to cost a few million civilian lives, a way of showing Russia how

Well, he did call the Chinese a "subspecies" which is pretty awful.  I should say that I am,  in fact, a huge fan of his music.  All the same he has said some  embarrassing things over the years which can only and with the greatest of intellectual acrobatics NOT be construed as racist and offensive.

Yeah, I sort of lost interest after that boring album with an egg on the cover.  Did I miss anything?

"He'll listen to what someone says and then he'll smile enigmatically and then he'll look away into the middle distance as if remembering something from the past, laugh about it, and then return to the dialogue."
