I found the episode to be more interesting because Kurt refused the help of this friends. It created more conflict within the story. His lack of faith in God was just a strong as their belief that there is a God, and they didn't expect that.
His character can be allowed to cry in the episode where he's about to lose the last reliable person in his life.
