It's been over 20 years since I read it but that sounds vaguely familiar. The wiki for That Was Then, This Is Now also mentions other characters from The Outsiders who figure into the story; brothers Tim and Curly Shepard as well as Randy, the Soc mentioned in the article, all make appearances.

On the serious tip though, reading obits like this just reinforces my belief that all the folks involved with  The Muppets, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock and so on are deserving of sainthood or something. They put so much goodness out into world.
