You don't have to like a show to review it adequately … but you do need to have some sort of sympathy for what a show thinks it's trying to accomplish, and be willing to judge it on those terms.  Without that there's simply no point to you, and that's mainly what raises reader hackles about PDN's assignment to South

The former seems right on.  There's a whole jungle of intra-regional variation to which media types (including actors) seem utterly oblique.  But then, so are many native U.S. speakers from outside the relevant regions.
