This may not be very revelatory but I'm pretty proud of myself for coming up with it independently. 
The Wire was my first real HBO show and will forever hold a place in my heart above pretty much everything. However, Deadwood might have to go above it, and I'm saying this as I still have the last half-season to watch…

I like it because it develops characters and tells stories almost at the narrative level of the other shows mentioned, without having to be overly dark and gritty.
