It's not about investment, it's about the fact that the CGI makes these films thematically empty cartoons that are being sold to grown adults for $15 a pop instead of broadcast on fucking TV. The Marvel films make Justice League Unlimited look like Citizen Kane.

Grim superhero stories are (mostly) commentaries on the superhero genre — think Alan Moore's work (Watchmen, etc) and stuff like The Dark Knight Returns. Making a hero dark is a subversion of the basic idea of the hero.

Lighthearted superhero movies are the worst, because it only exposes the fascism at the core of hero narratives. They should either be dark, mythological, or campy. They're too ludicrous to be anything else.

This would have been way better if Ben Kingsley was speakee Chinee, because at least then it would be funny instead of just vapidly, panderingly stupid.
