To play devils advocate with the racket: sure, because it's a tv show, it's obvious. But if it wasn't a tv show and it was really happening I don't think I'd have assumed the racket had any special meaning. So why whouod the characters? I don't know if I really buy that or not, but the racket didn't bother me.
