They just want to be left alone so they can measure the rate at which mold grows on cave walls or figure out how to build a thermometer that can measure temperatures close to absolute zero. BTW, the sociology department at my old university kept trying to present itself as a science; they would totally go apeshit if someone called them "liberal arts".
