I heartily recommend to search for the free 6-part podcast of Ken Hollings' "Welcome to Mars" which covers 1945-58 or so.
You would need someone who could put forth some serious authoritative weight with a hint of menace… and still looks natural in a period dated suit, not a modern actor playing dressup. Hamm has that era quality but he's too lanky and tall and has that show through friendly streak.

I understand what you are saying. Some of the story arcs are quite jarring and never quite play out. (fat lee adama, the rushed New Caprica, the Tigh 6 baby).
