I feel like 80% of any given genre of medium is the same recycled, watered-down ideas. Comics tend to mostly be male power fantasies becauseā€¦ well, superheroes started there. All other genres featured in comics existed before comicsā€¦ except superheroes.

Comics Complaints edit
I meant "Free Comic Book Day," which happens in early May, where all the publishers give out free, new-reader friendly issues of popular books.

Comics Complaints
I don't understand your complaints about the DCU panel catering to fans. This is a convention. These things were started to bring fans together. There are other efforts, like New Comic Book Day, which are geared towards bringing in new fans.

I wasn't aware the Lauren Tom thing existed, so I popped in my copy of Into the Wild Green Yonder, and watched it.

I was hoping negotiations magically resolving the dispute would have happened this week and be announced at Comic Con. Oh, well.

Ditto the love for Calvin and Hobbes.

If Killing Joke and Watchmen are the alpha and omega of your comic book love, then you haven't read enough comics. Watchmen is one of my favorite books (not just comics, mind you) of all time, but it's hardly the entire medium in a twelve issue maxi-series.

I actually found a Chick tract taped to a table in a mall once. I'd read some before, posted and deconstructed on a snarky website, but finding one in the real world, realizing someone had put it there with the intent of evangelizing, freaked me the fuck out.

My recommendation for new readers would be Dan Clowes' "Ghost World."

Agreed! Unless we get some good comics coverage, I demand you send someone to cover a less flashy convention. Dragon Con looks to be shaping up to be pretty cool.

Agreed. Good work, AV club.

Penguin, what are you talking about? Morrison's run is generally the most respected X-Men run after Claremont's, and vastly different while staying true to the original ideas that started the book.

As far as voiceover artists go, Billy West is one of the top guys.

We actually had to watch "The Other Sister" at my high school. In religion class, the year we learned about morality. It was on the unit on retarded people, if you can believe it.

I don't think House is the best thing on TV, but the fact that a snob like me has been suckered into watching a formulaic procedural speaks to its overall quality. Laurie's performance anchors it, but it's a great ensemble cast, and the medical stuff occasionally hits on some very interesting themes.

House is an infinitely better show than Lost.

It's been made pretty explicit that Damien was conceived naturally, but then grown in an artificial womb. And occasionally has his organs replaced after particularly gruesome fights (at least while under his mother's care).

I like the scenes where they punch dames after a few stiff drinks.

Sometimes love is seeing "Transformers 2" and "Bruno." Being together is what matters.

I dunno about you guys, but I was pretty happy when Randy the Ram called out Cobain as a pussy in "The Wrestler."
