I think you are underestimating "rational, highly educated adults" superficiality and self consciousness over being judged on appearances.  Anyone can be flustered when faced with direct barbs and judgments regarding attractiveness, especially attractive people.

I'm of the opinion that Strangers With Candy was one of the greatest television comedies ever, cruelly overlooked, and massively ahead of its time…so…yea…I do love many an episode of South Park though.
