The other thing with discovering bands retrospectively is that a discography could be viewed collectively instead of chronologically. I think it makes the quality of the underlying songs matter more, and the "era" or "phase" of the band matter less.

I agree - there's always an opportunity for somebody to discover the Beatles for the first time.
Especially with the breadth of songs of the Beatles, you have to try actively to *hate* everything they've done.
That second point is really interesting. Most bands will evolve or soften the edges over time. Additionally, most bands that change course have a smaller audience.
The whole scene with Peggy and Ed was as tense as the gang negotiation scene.

Great observation. Brian Huskey is rad, and his inclusion in something is a pretty good sign I'll enjoy it. Chris Parnell is in the same class.
Also, Colin Farrell excepted, Mike has more charisma in 5 minutes of screen time than the entire True Detective 2 cast
