So telling an almost complete stranger about your teenage battle with cancer/death is not too personal, but a story about getting too messed up a bar previously is? I don't buy it. She's open when it's beneficial to her.

I think that by not having Amanda back out of her grandfather story the show took the unconventional route. I'm guessing most viewers thought she might be lying since it was a fairly dark, serious moment. It would have been too easy for Amanda to go "gotcha!"
