If you were Joel, taking into account everything we've seen from their relationship over the last 4 years, what would be the point in trying to work things out with Julia? Julia does not listen. She makes mistake after mistake and repeats them over and over.

It's mostly because of how scenes like that are shot. First of all, having the actors in the same room allows them to play off each other, which elevates the performances.

It WAS on the screen. It was just mostly subplots spaced out over 4 years of episodes. In the first season Joel was superdad and Julia struggled just to be there a lot of the time, often overstepping and causing problems in the process.

Not sure I'm seeing your point here.  You can say that Will McAvoy hates those things.  You can say that Aaron Sorkin hates those things.  But the content of the show clearly appreciates its young characters.  They broke the story and every tidbit of news that came with it.  Will and Mac interpreted and delivered it
