I don't understand where the financial hardship comes in.  He admittedly worked 30 days a year on that show and yet it somehow becomes a cautionary tale that he had to take a big pay cut after a dozen or so years and wasn't set up to retire when the show ended?

The verisimilitude in BE is very hit and miss.  I would imagine that they leave out the hats because if they stayed true to how it really was there would be scene after scene of guys standing outside in identical straw hats.  It was hard enough in the first two seasons to tell who was who.
