I think it was a combination of them being perceived as goofy hippies at the dawn of the alternative rock explosion and also the fact that their radio hits are a little annoying.
I lived in Canada as a kid in the late 80s/early 90s and I remember he was huge on MuchMusic for a couple years, we all listened to Symphony in Effect, then when I moved back to the States no one had ever heard of him. Always wondered what happened to him career-wise, his older stuff doesn't even show up on Spotify.
