I definitely agree that there are often benefits of tough parenting that don't show up until later in life. Case in point (and a true story), when I was five I absolutely hated reading. Knowing that this could hamper me in many ways later on in life, one day my mother locked me in a room and wouldn't let me out until

I, too, am glad that the final scenes showed both Korra and Lin getting their bending returned to them. I'm all for grittiness and realness — hell, I'm an A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones fan (so I'm apparently a bit of a masochist, as well) — but having the first season ending with Korra wrestling with suicide

Add my voice to the ones that are confused about Korra's supposed lack of character growth. I also want to point out that character growth in this show, just like character growth in real life, is never a straight line from immature/impatient/headstrong to mature/patient/obedient — it starts and stops, angles off in

Definitely gotta agree with this. I was mostly over at the ontd-legend of korra board on livejournal which, for the most part, is filled with hate, spite and badly reasoned arguments. I enjoy the way this board talks about the things it doesn't like but then gets over them and has a more productive conversation.

I absolutely loved what you said about the fact that Amon as a man made of falsehoods could never use the ultimate tool of good. The idea that you need a pure heart/spirit in order to manipulate energy
harkens (to me, at least) to the ideas of Gandhi — that non-violent
resistance is couched not in passivity or fear,
