It would still have some complaints but since the 90s was dominated by shows like this it would get the pass more often.  Seinfeld after all had story arcs in a couple seasons and they even recall previous episodes when the timing is right.

What's sad is award shows will still nominate Modern Family and Glee because they've never heard of anything else.

Well they aired back to back on Sunday nights.  Especially on a cable channel it's unheard of to have arguably the worst TV show of the year to air along side one of the best TV shows of the year.  Dexter's stink probably crossed into a bit of Homeland while viewers were watching both.
