I think people just forgot about Alton.  He dominated soo much they probably couldn't cast him to keep it balanced.  Or he felt he did all he could do at the time.   
Also it seemed half of the male cast members starting using roids or other PED's.

Also, Alton 2.0!!!  If the best athlete to every compete says he is even better shape, it could be interesting.   Though he might get tripped up on one of the mental challenges  (as most people on the show can barely spell as seen in past seasons.)
