Yes on A Serious Man. Would also prefer An Education to either Hurt Locker or Avatar. Avatar's my least favorite among the nominees that I've seen (but I bet the one with Sandra Bullock is worse).

This album is still good. But newcomers to Midlake should go to The Trials of Van Occupanther first.

I took his "Moments in Atheism" class in 2004 at University of Chicago that he co-taught with Shadi Bartsch. He was pretty engaging; I will read this book. Glad to see it got a good review.
