I am, oddly enough, completely unsurprised by any of this.
An unrealistic film is fine as long as it follows its own internal logic consistently (or at least has good reason for breaking that internal logic)
The White Album is one half absolute genius, one half self indulgent navel gazing drivel.
Chuck only had about 4 or 5 riffs but that's all he really needed.
It's run time is over 4 hours and both films differ slightly in tone with the first being much more action oriented. Splitting the story into two films made sense both artistically and commercially.
That's sort of his thing though. His entire filmography is basically pastiches and homages of earlier films filtered through his particular style of film making. Some people consider that a flaw. I do not. I find his films enjoyable, even (especially) when I can identify the influences.

Random observation: If you strip away most of the setting and genre elements of this film and one of Bigelow's earlier films, the underrated sci-fi thriller Strange Days you end up with two stories about a black man being framed for a murder committed by two corrupt police officers.
I prefer to think of him as an anthromorphic 4chan meme.
