I hear ya.  I'm a huge metal fan, so the screaming vocals isn't a hang up for me.  I'm always trying to get people past that, but sometimes it just isn't possible.  I'm not a big fan of cookie monster vocals myself, but certain bands (BTBAM, Disma, Death) pull it off amazingly.

I don't know if they count as prog, but Supertramp makes me want to murder.  Mostly the members of Supertramp but they're usually not around when I hear their awful music.
