But already in this movie we've seen a 1) dog with a man's head, 2) Leonard Nimoy as a New Age therapist and 3) a Jeff Goldblum performance so the camp bar has already been set high. I think your mistake is in thinking of the '78 version as a sober, serious dramamovie. In fact, the scream fits it like a glove.

When I was a kid and was reading about this movie and then happened to hear the term "McCarthyism," I assumed it referred to Kevin McCarthy.
