I was going to pass this one by, but upon reading the review and a couple of pages of comments, I could not help but feel that, if it ticked off the blogosphere and annoyed an A.V. TV Club reviewer that much, it had to be worth checking out.

Good list, and I agree that the Tiffany Aching series ("Hat Full of Sky") of novels by Terry Pratchett are the gold standard, just wonderful, all four of them.  Also by Pratchett is his rather sideways version of "Blue Lagoon" called "Nation" and it's a beautiful thing.  I know several of them have won major awards,

Fame seems to explode self-esteem way out of proportion.  If the "external validation" is positive, the subject regards her or himself as a godlike.  If the feedback is hugely negative… I just can't imagine having to contend with it, myself.
