I don't know Whitaker winning over him in what 2007 was horrendous on the Academy's part. It wouldn't even have been a sympathy Oscar either, his performance in Venus is that of a master.

I did that to a few friends with Kill List. I told them to check it out, they looked it up on wikipedia, just read the brief synopsis not the plot summary, checked the decent rotten tomatoes rating then decided to give the film a shot. Some of my my friends have still not forgiven me. It please me to no end.

That's true, but it's still an initial and understandable barrier for most people. And it's also not something that's all that easy to reacquire if you've stopped watching subtitles for quite some time, you have to go back through that orienting process.
