It's still a genre of unlimited imagination. I think you're confusing fantasy as a literary genre with fantasy as a publishing/bookstore category. The two don't always overlap all that well, and there's plenty of strong non-Tolkienesque fantasy out there. Whatever you may think of it (and I really loved it), one

I'm pretty sure Gene Wolfe did it with The Book of the New Sun.

the crowning irony
I'm sorry, the pun was irresistible.

what's a coffee achiever?
Just curious.

North by Northwest
Notorious
Suspicion
To Catch a Thief

From the article:

Movement may be still too indebted to Joy Division, but I'd put that one on the list, thus getting rid of the need for Republic (which is probably their weakest album). And yeah, Waiting for the Siren's Call is pretty good.

Yeah, those of with, say, a Sony Reader, we're just SOL, huh? Sigh.

George's armpit story
Intriguing.

fireflies
One of the hundred worst songs of all time?

I had the same reaction, Donuts. I kept thinking Neverwhere, only not as good. And partly it's what ckt points out: the characters aren't particularly developed or compelling. The main character was too much of a blank, mainly being pushed around by the exigencies of the plot. Dane was actually the best developed

hugh beaumont
Watching reruns as a kid, I was always thrown off by the announcer during the opening credits. He would pronounce his name "HUGHboe Mont," just eliding the two names together. Or that's my memory, anyway, and I'm sticking to it.

the scar
Granted, I haven't read Un Lun Dun or The City and the City yet, but my favorite Mieville remains The Scar. And to echo Skunk Ape in the first thread, Kraken didn't quite do it for me, either. There was a lot of stuff going on but it all felt a little rote and belabored.

What about the Magnificent Seven?

Yeah, don't say Rincewind. Me, I'd go with Granny Weatherwax and the coven.

I was wondering the same thing.

The Claim is kind of a poor man's McCabe and Mrs. Miller, but it's still awesome.

eh
I dunno, it's a thin, thin line between funny and unfunny on 30 Rock. This one fell on the wrong side for me. The Kim Jong-il stuff all seemed like weak SNL sketches. I suppose I got that impression at the start with the translation of his speech, and I couldn't get rid of the SNL taste. Anyone else have the same

Gottacook2, I understand why any director or casting director would want Spacey. You need a smart, hyper-verbal actor, why wouldn't you cast Spacey? I'm just saying that, as a viewer, I've grown somewhat bored of his limited range.
