Read what Rian Johnson said about the child actor in Looper and child acting in general. He says it wasn't just play time for the kid in that, but that he understood what was being asked of him and took the acting seriously. I think the case is the same for the girl, and I think you aren't giving her enough credit.

It took 200 pages for the Post Apocalyptic part of the stand to happen. But that was only 1/7th of the novel
