Being too self-centered and oblivious to know you're hurting someone doesn't absolve you of your crime. If anything, I think it makes him more of an asshole BECAUSE he's not aware. If a dude knows he's being an asshole, at least it means he knows the difference between right and wrong and is choosing the wrong.

I also think it's just a symptom of getting older.
