The rape was subtle but I thought obvious enough. The part that I did not get the first time was that her husband committed suicide because he was gay. Although, a longer, restored version was recently released (and TCM has been airing it) that includes an extended scene that adds a tad more color around the situation…

While I understand where you're coming from, casting Leigh was a stroke of genius. Blanche is like an aging, bizzaro-world (or, ironically, a real-world) Scarlett O'Hara, and I think it's purposeful that the audience is reminded of Scarlett when watching the movie.

That would be a good point, except Baltimore the city on the Wire is as close as you can get to Baltimore the actual city without it being a documentary. Maybe the real issue is that he enjoys the tragedy and grittiness of the city in the abstract, but when actually faced with it, he detests it.
