There was also the tiny detail that Lang was Jewish.

Is Jezebel really considered a deep cut? It stars two of the most famous actors of the 1940 and wasn't there some sort of Oscar recognition for this one?

The rape was subtle but I thought obvious enough. The part that I did not get the first time was that her husband committed suicide because he was gay. Although, a longer, restored version was recently released (and TCM has been airing it) that includes an extended scene that adds a tad more color around the situation

While I understand where you're coming from, casting Leigh was a stroke of genius. Blanche is like an aging, bizzaro-world (or, ironically, a real-world) Scarlett O'Hara, and I think it's purposeful that the audience is reminded of Scarlett when watching the movie.

I'm not sure if it's a legacy thing or what, but this column is tired and unfunny, plus more than half the time, it's downright wrong or out of touch. I'm thinking just make a clean break with Amelie. No one gives a flying fuck anymore.

That would be a good point, except Baltimore the city on the Wire is as close as you can get to Baltimore the actual city without it being a documentary. Maybe the real issue is that he enjoys the tragedy and grittiness of the city in the abstract, but when actually faced with it, he detests it.
