Oh, I thought I'd blocked out the memory of A Day No Pigs Would Die.  And now I'm thinking about 'The Gift' portion of Steinbeck's The Red Pony.  Has anyone looked in to why realistic animal slaughter is apparently a prevalent component of elementary-school level literature?

I read Catcher when I was 14, and found Holden to be horrible and uninteresting - the last person I wanted to spend a novel's length of time with.  Some years later I read A Perfect Day for Bananafish in an anthology, was bowled over by how much I loved it, then quickly devoured everything else Salinger had written.

On top of everything else, he is also quite a good painter.  I had to double-check after initially seeing his paintings to make sure it wasn't some other dude who happened to be named Martin Mull.

My first thought when I saw this article was whether it had anything to do with Ellroy. Too bad the answer was no, as he is unparalleled in the realm of modern 'crime' fiction.  Leonard doesn't even come close.

I would bet money that most people are going to think you're one-third of the homicidal trio from 'The Strangers.' I do hope I'm wrong about that, though.
