I liked HHH winning because it furthers the long character arc of HHH of him being self-conscious and thinking he's better than he is. He thinks he's the only way to get rid of Roman and he does and wins the title again. And really it's like a throwback to Vince winning except HHH is much more credible.

I'm not sure how I feel as to the assertion that I am in denial (because I started watching in 2003 I dont really have nostalgia for him) of The Rock being a great character because he seemed pretty great tonight

I vehemently disagree on The Rock segment mostly because I had so much fun during it and I watch wrestling to be entertained. Sure it's out of place but the amount of entertainment I got from it more than made up for the fact that The Rock coming back wasn't really necessary.
